Tuesday July 27th: Brazil (dvd)
Director's cut of the classic from Terry Gilliam. Richly layered and right paranoid. Tales of tangled bureaucracy and creative plumbing. Don't suspect a friend - report him!

Tuesday July 20th: No Movie

Due to an unfortunate scheduling conflict, we were not be able to host a movie this evening.

Tuesday July 13th: The Chase (laserdisc)
And now for a bit of mindless fun! Charlie Sheen accidently takes Kristy Swanson hostage and makes a run for the border. Cast includes Henry Rollins, Flea and Anthony Kiedis.

Tuesday July 6th: No Movie

Due to a rather invasive cold germ, there was no movie night this night.

Tuesday June 29th: Velvet Goldmine (dvd)
Another one I think we all missed when it came through the theatres, and yet another movie with Ewan McGregor. Seventies glam rock extravaganza!

The best of the four Alien movies. Lots of rip-snortin' alien butt-kickin'! Directed by James Cameron. Director's Cut.

The richest, lushest fantasy film you will ever see. Directed by Ridley Scott. Tom Cruise and Timothy Curry.

Tuesday May 18th: Dr. Strangelove, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (dvd)
Strange love indeed! Whether it's a potent metaphor for our times or just some inspired lunicy, you have to admit it's a fine little film. Directed by Stanley Kubrick.

Tuesday May 11th: No Movie

Due to yet more scheduling conflicts (the MetaCreations Engineering Summit), we had no Movie Night this Tuesday.

Tuesday May 4th: No Movie

Due to the fact that I was out rockin' at the Love & Rockets concert on Tuesday there was no movie this week.

Tuesday April 27th: Blue Velvet (laserdisc)
Classic David Lynch, probably my favorite of his. Rich and disturbing.

Tuesday April 20th: Postponed

Due to an extreme confluence of scheduling conflicts, Blue Velvet was postponed until next Tuesday. No movie night tonight.

Tuesday April 13th: The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (laserdisc)
A fairy tale by Terry Gilliam. Excessive and extremely silly, in a lovable sort of way.

Tuesday April 6th: Eat Drink Man Woman (laserdisc)
A lovely little movie about food and human relationships directed by Ang Lee. Not recommended for an empty stomach. Mandarin with English subtitles.

Tuesday March 30th: So I Married an Axe Murderer (laserdisc)
Just a wee bit 'o fun from Mike Myers.

Tuesday March 16th: 2001: A Space Odyssey (dvd)
With Stanley Kubrick's recent passing, we have lost a distinctive voice. I recently had the opportunity to see several of his films on the big screen and it was a truly inspiring experience.

Maybe you've noticed the window displays around town? This week, movie night will be held downtown at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

The third and final film in Krzysztof Kieslowski's Trois Couleurs trilogy. Warm and thoughtful. Irene Jacob and Jean-Louis Trintignant. French with English subtitles.

Tuesday February 23rd: Cube (dvd)
Finally out on dvd and I think just about everyone missed it when it came through. Intense, claustrophobic, metaphorical and low class. Not for the faint of heart.

Tuesday February 16th: Dog Day Afternoon (laserdisc)
Classic bank heist film with Al Pacino. Tense atmosphere and sharp dialog.

Tuesday February 9th: White (laserdisc)
The second in Krzysztof Kieslowski's Trois Couleurs trilogy. Wicked and complex. Julie Delpy. French and Polish with English subtitles.

Is it a scathing exploration of how sex affects our lives or just a breezy "it happened one summer" comedy? You decide! Very sharply written. Christina Ricci and Martin Donovan.

Tuesday January 19th: Blue (laserdisc)
The first in Krzysztof Kieslowski's Trois Couleurs trilogy. Thoughtful and enchanting. Juliette Binoche. French with English subtitles.

Tuesday January 12th: After Hours (laserdisc)
Movie night is back in business! We start off the year with an odd little comedy by Martin Scorsese about a fellow who gets stuck in SoHo one evening. Needless to say, I'm a bit of a fan of the film.

Tuesday December 15th through Tuesday January 5th 1999: No Movies

Off for Christmas, New Years and Macworld.

Tuesday December 8th: Ma saison préférée / My Favorite Season (vhs)
This is a very special, and just a little sad, movie night: It's the last one Casey and Lauren will be attending before they jump that big puddle and become French. While I'll miss them terribly, I'm excited about their new adventure. To celebrate, we'll be adventuresome and watch a French film we've heard good things about but have not seen. Come one, come all and help us toast this new chapter!

Tuesday December 1st: Naked Lunch (laserdisc)
David Cronenberg's hallucinatory look at William S. Burroughs's life and work. This one just seems to keep getting better every time I watch it. Speaking of themes, this is the second movie night movie with Judy Davis (the first being The Ref) and Ian Holm (the first being The Fifth Element). Hmm...

Tuesday November 24th: The Fifth Element (dvd)
Pure fun. Very French (from the direction of Luc Besson to the designs of Jean 'Moebius' Giraud and everything in between). I'm beginning to notice certain themes here at movie night. This is the third movie night movie featuring the costumes of Jean-Paul Gaultier (the others being The City of Lost Children and The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover).

Tuesday November 17th: Wings of Desire (vhs)
Wim Wenders's wonderful tale of angels in Berlin. German with English subtitles.

Denis Leary, Judy Davis and Kevin Spacey in a bitter battle of wits. Wicked good fun.

Classic Russ Meyer. Bad-ass babes wreaking havoc. Deep psychological trauma lurks within here.

Tuesday October 27th: No Movies

Closed for TV repair. :(

Tuesday October 20th: The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover (laserdisc)
Peter Greenaway. A rich tapestry of a movie. At once satisfying and disturbing.

Tuesday September 29th through Tuesday October 13th: No Movies

I was away in Italy with my father and sister. :)

Tuesday September 22nd: Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (laserdisc)
Delightful comedy of con men dueling it out on the French Riviera, directed by Frank Oz (you know, the man behind Miss Piggy and Yoda). Michael Caine and Steve Martin.

Tuesday September 15th: Hard Boiled (laserdisc)
Probably John Woo's most intense action ballet, led by Chow Yun-Fat. Extremely violent, beautifully choreographed. Cantonese with English subtitles.

Tuesday September 8th: The City of Lost Children (laserdisc)
Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet's enchanting and haunting fable. Beautifully shot and richly detailed. French with subtitles.

Tuesday August 25th: Fearless (laserdisc)
A thoughtful piece on catastrophe and the human spirit. Jeff Bridges, Isabella Rossellini and Rosie Perez.

Tuesday August 18th: Dune (dvd)
David Lynch's sci-fi epic. Odd, complicated and very pretty. Kyle McLaughlin, Sean Young, Patrick Stewart, even Sting!

Monday August 10th: House of Games (vhs)
A delightful little tale of con artists and the people who obsess over them, co-written and directed by David Mamet. Nicely executed.

Monday August 3rd: Desperado (laserdisc)
Robert Rodriguez's followup to El Mariachi. Fun stuff... Very heavy John Woo influences.

Monday July 27th: Joe Versus the Volcano (vhs)
Is it a fluffy romantic comedy or a parable for our times packed with chewy goodness? You decide! Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan, Meg Ryan and Meg Ryan.

Monday July 20th: El Mariachi (laserdisc)
Robert Rodriguez's auspicious debut directorial effort.

Monday July 13th: Postponed

I'm not sure now why it didn't work out, but we were going to show El Mariachi tonight.

Monday July 6th: Bound (dvd)
A step above your average lesbians and gangsters caper movie with delightful portrayals by Jen Tilly, Gina Gershon and Joe Pantoliano. A very promising directorial debut from the Wachowski brothers.

Monday June 29th: Time Bandits (laserdisc)

Vintage Terry Gilliam.

 Monday June 22nd: Clueless (laserdisc)

Monday June 15th: Romeo Is Bleeding (laserdisc)
An overwrought modern film noir with over-the-top performances by Gary Oldman and Lena Olin.

Monday June 8th: What's Eating Gilbert Grape (laserdisc)
A quiet little meditation on the strange turns life takes in a small town. Very evocative.

Monday June 1st: Seven (dvd)
An extremely dark and moody thriller by David Fincher. Very rich and thick. One of my favorites.

Monday April 13th: Wishmaster (dvd)

 Monday April 6th: Contact (dvd)
We ended up watching it with the Jodie Foster commentary. Some fun insights into the film.

Monday March 30th: Death and the Maiden (laserdisc)
A tense drama about torture and its psychological aftermath, set on a dark and stormy night somewhere in South America. Excellent performances from Sigourney Weaver and Ben Kingsley. Tightly directed by Roman Polanski.
